given as Harriet Ann Mathews in the comepnsation records, one of dozens of legatees of William White awarded a share in the compensation for the enslaved people on Woodstock in St Ann Jamaica, many of which awardees having connections to Essex or parts of what is now east London.

  1. Almost certainly the Harriett [sic] Ann Matthews, daughter of Matthew and Ann Mary Matthews of Hackney, baptised 17/05/1807 at St Leonards Shoreditch. This Harriet Ann Matthews married Oliver Williams at St Leonards 25/02/1838 when she was described as of 5 New Gloucester Street Hoxton, daughter of Matthew Matthews cabinet-maker. Matthew Matthews had married Ann Mary Sawtell 20/05/1804 at St Andrew by the Wardrobe: other claimants under the same award were named Sawtell.
