John Dalton

???? - 1851

Claimant or beneficiary

John Dalton of Peckham, one of a group of three counterclaimants for the compensation for the enslaved people in L'amitie in Trinidad as incumbrancers under the marriage settlement of Eliza Rosee Forbes and Marc Rene Comte de Montalembert. He also counterclaimed, again apparently without success, as the trustee of James Forbes, for the compensation for another smaller award in Trinidad.

  1. John Dalton of Peckham Road aged 71 was buried at St Giles Camberwell 05/12/1851. He was given as 'Retired silk manufacturer' in the 1851 census. If this is the same man, his role in the marriage settlement of a French count and Eliza Rosee Forbes alongside two aristocratic colleagues presumably flowed from his relationship through business with James Forbes, the father of Eliza Rosee Forbes, an East India Co. man and author of Oriental Memoirs, which Eliza Rosee Forbes edited.
