William Young of Auchenskeoch

???? - 1777

Biography

William Young of Auchenskeoch, Lt-Governor of Tobago 1771-1777, son of Alexander Young (d. 1743-1750) and Mary Herries, and brother of Robert Young of Auchenskeoch (q.v.) and Major Alexander Young.

  1. Almost certainly the original grantee of the Auchenskeoch estate in Tobago with Robert Young of Auchenskeoch under St Andrew nos. 12-14 (Robert Young) and nos. 15-16 ('Will. Young'). Tentative identification at present also of 'Will. Young' the original grantee of Hope under St George no. 1 (with Alex. Stevenson under St George nos. 7 & 8) as William Young of Auchenskeoch. There is scope for confusion with other grants to 'Wm Young' and with Sir William Young 1st bart.

  2. Will of William Young of the Island of St Vincent proved 06/08/1777 (by his widow Anna). In the brief will he left everything to his wife Anna, and recommended to her care his nephew John Spearman, whose guardian he was under John Spearman's mother's will. On 12/09/1777 administration of the will passed to Harriet Young, Anna Young's sister (and wife of William Young's brother Robert) after Anna's death.

H. B. McCall, Some old families: a contribution to the genealogical history of Scotland Vol. 2 (Birmingham: Watson & Ball, 1890). An online source on FiveGateways questions the identification of William Young as Governor of Tobago, suggesting confusion with Sir William Young 2nd bart. (who was indeed Governor of Tobago 1807-1815) but William Young of Auchenskeoch was Lt Governor of Tobago 1771-1777.

  1.
