11th Dec 1764 - ????
Slave-owner of Scottish origin, owner of Banks estate in Vere, the enslaved people attached to which were sold between 1826 and 1829. No will has been found for him in the Scottish records.
Born 11/12/1764 and baptised 22/12/1764 in Edinbugh, son of Robert Gib[b], "Coachmaster in College Kirk parish" and Mary Dallas his spouse. One of the witnesses to the baptism was "Robert Dallas from Jamaica". The marriage record of Robert Gibb and Mary Dallas describes Mary as "daughter to the deceast James Dallas of St Martins @ Craig Leith" but the Dallas family was also established in Jamaica by this time.
According to an unsourced website, Robert Charles Gibb travelled to Jamaica towards the end of the 18th century and in 1797 was resident on Ludlow estate in Clarendon. The same website gives his children as James Mitchell Gibb (born c. 1807 and resident in Jamaica throughout his life) and Charlotte Gibb but no mothers' names.
By 1809 he was owner of Banks plantation in Vere which he still owned in 1826. This estate has not been found in the almanacs after 1827 nor in the slave registers after 1826; the enslaved people attached to it in 1826 had been sold by 1829 to Adam Hogg (q.v.) under a writ of venditioni exponas, implying he was in financial distress.
In Vere in 1826, Robert Charles Gibb registered 3 enslaved people as guardian of Robert Charles Gibb junior.
