James Simpson was the grantee of the first land sale on Tobago, that of Courland Bay division (St David parish) Lot no. 1 (500 acres) 20/05/1765, which became the Courland estate. He was the James Simpson who was the Chief Surveyor of the southern Caribbean at the time, and the author of the Plan of Georgetown, Barbados Bay (1765).
