Slave-owner in Jamaica, apparently selling out of his interests there and returning or moving to Britain. The two estates he owned in different parishes are linked by the presence of the same attorney, Rhodes E. Evans, for both.
Death "Yesterday sennight, at Stafford Terrace, Heavitree, James Potter, Esq. formerly of the island of Jamaica ; whose kind and affectionate manners will long endear his memory to his sorrowing family and friends."
Will of James Potter of Heavitree Devon [formerly of St Elizabeth Jamaica] [made in 1824] proved 22/01/1829. He left his personalty and real estate for his wife Rebecca Cresse Potter (q.v.) and his daughters. The will is silent on property in Jamaica.
