5th Jul 1767 - 19th Nov 1836
Harnage was the son of John Lucie Blackman (1735-1797), West India merchant [q.v.] and Mary Harnage (1738-1836), who, after Blackman's death, married Admiral Sir Edmund Nagle (1757-1830). George Blackman assumed the surname Harnage on marrying his cousin, Mary, in 1821. He was also made a Baronet in the same year. She was the daughter of Lt. Col. Henry Harnage of London (1739-1826) and Honora Painter of Falmouth, Cornwall (dates not known).
For reasons of clarity, Blackman is included in the surname here.
Sir George Harnage was subject to bankruptcy proceedings from 1823. Will of Dame Mary Harnage, widow of 18 Beaufoy Terrace proved 26/01/1844: See notes on Sir George's youngest son, Edward Harnage, who was awarded part of the compensation for the Boarded Hall estate, St George, Barbados.
George Blackman was listed as Director of the Bank of England in 1810, 1811, 1813, 1814, 1816, 1817, 1819 and 1820. The Bank of England has a portrait of George Blackman by John Hoppner.
See entry for Edward Harnage.
