Biography

Resident slave-owner in Jamaica.

Edward Luttman of Fustic Grove, Westmoreland, Jamaica, and Mary his wife, had eight children baptised in Jamaica: Dorothy (baptised 11/02/1752 in St Elizabeth), Bonella (baptised 06/04/1754 in Westmoreland but listed in the St Elizabeth parish records), Elizabeth Duncan (born 18/07/1756 and baptised 18/07/1756 in St Elizabeth), Sarah (born 27/05/1758 and baptised 16/05/1758 in St Elizabeth), John (born 31/01/1761 and baptised 03/09/1761 in St Elizabeth), Hugh (baptised 19/01/1764 in St Elizabeth), Catherine (born 18/09/1764 and baptised 22/08/1766 in St Elizabeth) and Margaret (born 28/05/1767 and baptised 08/02/1769 in St Elizabeth).

Edward Lutman was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 63 acres of land in Westmoreland.

Edward Luttman of Westmoreland, planter. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1780. Slave-ownership at probate: 23 of whom 9 were listed as male and 14 as female. 2 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £2055.46 Jamaican currency of which £1170 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £484.03 currency debts and £72.75 currency plate.

By 1817 the enslaved people on Fustic Grove were in the possession of Catherine, Margaret, Bonella and Sarah each as part owners. Catherine had died by 1823 and Sarah by 1829. At Emancipation, Margaret was the sole owner of 61 enslaved people on Fustic Grove.
