Biography

Annuitant on Berkshire Hall in Jamaica, widow of John James Vidal (q.v.) and mother of John Gale Vidal. Given as Elizabeth Gale Vidal in the compensation records.

  1. Elizabeth was in Jamaica in 1805 for the birth of her son Francis. He was admitted to Caius College, Cambridge, in 1827 and attended Eton, later becoming a vicar and 'sometime S.P.G. Missionary in Australia'. Their second son George 'was born in Spanish Town, Jamaica. School, Eton, under Dr Keate. Admitted pensioner [Gaius College], May 8, 1834. Age 19. Migrated to Trinity, July 5 1837. BA 1839. Went to N.S.Wales in 1840. Ordained in Australia, and took charges at Sutton Forest and Campbell Town. Incumbent of St Mary, Denham Court, Sydney, 1846-56; and of Mulgoa, 1856-65. Incumbent of Ch. Church, St Lawrence, Sydney, 1865-77. Going for a change of air to Melbourne, he died on the voyage, Jan. 10, 1878.'

  2. In 1841, Elizabeth Vidal, age 66, of independent means, was living on Newport Row in Bishops Tawton, Barnstaple, Devon. In 1851, Elizabeth Wade Vidal, age 76, widowed, born Jamaica British Subject, was a lodger in the house of James Bowden on Newport Road in Bishop's Tawton.

  3. The will of Elizabeth Wade Vidal late of Newport in the Parish of Bishop's Tawton in the County of Devon Widow deceased who died 18 October 1858 at Newport aforesaid was proved at Exeter by the oath of the Reverend Francis Vidal of Eton College in the County of Buckingham Clerk the Son and the Sole Executor. Effects under £300. Resworn Oct. 1859 under £1000.

  4. An unsourced online family tree gives Elizabeth Wade Allwood born 26/10/1774 in Savanna La Mar, Jamaica, married 15/05/1791 in St Elizabeth, Jamaica, died 18/10/1858 in Newport, Devon. Maiden name Allwood, wife of John James Vidal who was born 19/09/1763 in Westmoreland, Jamaica, and died 22/10/1823 at 34 Richmond Terrace, Clifton, Gloucs.
