Biography

Steuart (also given as Stuart and sometimes as Stewart) Spencer Davis, son of Benjamin Brown Davis (q.v) and Frances Davis nee Darnell. Born Newcastle-on-Tyne 1805.

  1. Will of Steuart Spencer Davis of Bournemouth died 15/09/1896 proved 07/11/1896 effects £74,571 6s 7d. In 1891 he had been living at Spencer House Holdenhurst Hampshire aged 86 'living on own means', with four daughters aged between 35 and 45, all born St Kitts. In 1871, when he was living at Reigate, he had been shown as 'West India proprietor.' Steuart Spencer Davis' grandson and namesake Sir Steuart Spencer Davis (d. 1950) was Treasurer of Palestine and then Governor of St Helena 1932-1938.

  2. 'The will of Mr. Steuart Spencer Davis, formerly of St. Kitts, who died at Bournemouth last September, has recently been proved, the gross amount being [£]78 300 [sic]. Mr. Davis was a splendid representative of the planter of bygone days, and lived in the enjoyment of comparatively good health to the ripe old age of 91. The name is still well known in the island of St. Kitts, where his descendants are large estate-holders and employers of labour. During the many years he resided at Bournemouth he made many friends, by whom he was much respected and held in high esteem.'
