Henry Skrine

1788 - 1853

Biography

Son of Henry Skrine and Marianne Chalie, and grandson of Susannah Chalie (q.v.). With his grandmother, he was shown as co-owner of an estate called Portici [?] on Grenada in 1817: their path to ownership is not yet clear, nor has the estate yet been identified further. His father, also Henry Skrine (d. 1803) has an entry in the ODNB as 'traveller.'

  1. 'Occupation: Rather unclear. He inherited from his father, a barrister and landowner, and also from his mother's relatives, who were wealthy wine merchants in London. "Landed proprietor" (1851 Census) Our man does not appear to have had an occupation or profession. He was described in his obituary in the Illustrated London News (24 September 1853) as "a considerable landed proprietor in the counties of Somerset and Buckinghamshire." No one of his name is listed in Bateman, although two of his sons owned 1805 acres worth £3745 p.a. in Berkshire and Somerset, according to the Return of Owners of Land. "Of Stubbings House, Bisham, Berkshire and Warleigh, Bathford, Somerset, and Green Street, Grosvenor Square, Middlesex" (PROB8).'
