Arthur Savage senior

1766 - 1815

Biography

  1. Arthur Savage was the son of an American loyalist, in turn also Arthur (d. 1801, originally a merchant 'in the West India way' in Boston). The younger Arthur Savage of this entry became a merchant in the partnership of Arthur Savage & Co. Kingston Jamaica, and coffee planter of Strawberry Hill. He in turn had two 'natural' sons - Arthur and Richard. Arthur Savage died c. 1815. In his will be made specific bequests to among others his nieces left his residual estate to his sister Faith (later Fidelia, who married the Rev. Richard Munkhouse, both q.v.), and to two natural sons, Arthur and Richard by Jane Bowie. His will also provided for them to be educated in England.

  2. The London merchant firm of Bird, Savage & Bird was clearly connected to the family given the evidence of naming practices including 'Bird' among the children of Arthur's sister Faith/Fidelia Munkhouse. Fidelia's husband, Rev. Richard Munkhouse, was on terms of friendship with John Savage (the father of Benjamin of Bird, Savage & Bird).

  3. Arthur, born 29/02/1804 and Richard, born 05/05/1806, children of Jane Bowie, "a free mestee by Arthur Savage", were baptised in Kingston, Jamaica, 14/07/1806. They had two daughters as well: Eliza Sturgess, born 25/01/799 and baptised 08/01/1800; and Jane, born 15/07/1801 and baptised 23/07/1802.

We are grateful to Alan Savage and Ted Robbens for assistance in compiling this entry.
