Biography

Sister, executrix and heir of Sir Simon Richard Brissett Taylor (q.v.). She left £120,000 on her death at Cheltenham in 1817.

  1. In the will of Martha Taylor spinster of Great Cumberland Place proved 17/12/1817, she made numerous monetary bequests to a nexus of Jamaican connections, and left her 'moiety' [half] of Lyssons estate in Jamaica to her mother Elizabeth Goodin Taylor and sister Maria Taylor for their lives, and then to the children of Maria Taylor and (if none) then to the children of another sister, Anna Susannah Watson Taylor. Successive Letters of Administration of the will were granted to George Watson Taylor (Martha Taylor's brother-in-law), in 1823 as committee of the lunatic Maria Taylor and in 1830 as executor of Dame Elizabeth Goodin Taylor.

A biographical directory of British wealth-holders Vol. 1 1809-1839 (2009) p. 119 reference 1817/20,which identifies her wealth as 'Jamaica plantation fortune'; there is a second entry for Martha Taylor at p. 325 reference 1830/30, but this in fact refers to the same woman - the 1830 entry in the Probate Calendar arose from a grant of administration of the 1817 will of Martha Taylor.
