Charles Stewart Parker the elder

West India merchant in Glasgow, partner in the precursor of Sandbach Tinne and father of the second Charles Stewart Parker (q.v.). Son of James Parker of Liverpool (1729-1815), a Virginia and then West India merchant. Died in 1828, leaving £105,893.

1. Will of Charles Stewart Parker merchant of Glasgow proved 18/11/1828. The will begins with a reiteration of his faith and emphasis on his sins. He divided his estate into hundredths, with 18 parts going to each of his sons Charles Stewart; James ('born in lawful wedlock to me by my wife Margaret Rainy' - the only child of whom this is said); George; and Patrick: 14 parts each went to his daughters Susan and Ann. In a codicil he dealt with his share in the Sandbach Tinne concerns, new articles of partnership for which had been put in place in 1822. He owned 15/100ths of the partnerships in Glasgow, Liverpool and Demerary, of which he was entitled to sell two-thirds, so that he declared that he could now make over by will 10 of the hundred shares to his son Charles Stewart Parker 'which includes of course the five shares actually already made over to him' in the new articles.

2. Anthony Cooke shows an estate of £117,329, including £57,563 in the linked partnerships of Sandbach Tinne [given as 'Ginnie'], McInroy Parker, and McInroy Sandbach; £20,417 owed in respect of plantations in Demerara by Samuel Sandbach and Peter McLagan, £19,368 owed in respect of plantations by McInroy Parker, £3100 in the Monkland Canal Co. and £11,436 in consols.
