Biography

Mary Ballard Beckford Johnstone, nee Beckford, owner of the Whitehall estate in Jamaica, daughter of Ballard Beckford II, widow of James Johnstone the elder (q.v.) and mother of James Johnstone and Robert Ballard Johnstone (both of whom q.v.). Her daughter Mary Beckford Johnstone married Charles Bevan in 1808. Her husband died in London in 1815: no will was proved for him but the suit of Johnston v Johnston of 1817 set out the background to the dispute over his draft will of 1793.

  1. Will of Mary Ballard Beckford Johnston [sic] widow of Upper Wimpole Street St Marylebone proved 18/04/1823. In her will she left her Whitehall estate to her son James Johnston, £7000 to her daughter Mary Beckford Bevan and £12000 to her son Robert Ballard Johnston, £4000 to the children of her late son William Clarke Johnston, £5000 each to her daughters Frances Elizabeth Mitchell and Jane Helena Johnston.
