Of Heybridge Essex and Jamaica. Son of Oliver Hering. Married firstly to Susanna, daughter of Richard Quarrel. Susanna died en route to England in 1854; they had no children together. Ensign in the 34th Regiment of Foot in 1756, Lieutenant in 1757. Resigned his commission in 1760. Remarried, to Mary, daughter of John Inglis, in Philadelphia in 1761. Father of Julines Hering, Oliver Hering, Catherine Gordon (each of whom q.v.) and of Eleanor Milbanke, father-in-law of John Gordon and J. Peniston Milbanke (each of whom q.v.). A third daughter married Rev. John Lumley-Savile, the 7th Earl of Scarbrough, and fourth Mary Helen married Henry Middleton, a South Carolinan politician and slave-owner. Hering inherited the lease of Heybridge Hall in Essex from his uncle Rev Julines Hering (1694-1775). Died at Paul Island, Jamaica, 14/03/1797 aged 65 years. Family papers for the Herings are held at the South Carolina Historical Society.
