Thomas Iredell

Biography

Attorney General of Jamaica in 1766. President of the Council of Jamaica from 1775 until his death in 1796. Described by Governor Lyttelton as 'a Gentleman of very fair Character and Good Fortune in this Island'.

He left his estate to his nephew Arthur Iredell after disinheriting his other nephew James Iredell (1751-1799) for his support of the American Revolution.

Died in Jamaica, September 1796.

A Thomas Iredell (or Iredill) was present in Jamaica in August 1755 when he was a witness to the signing of the will of William Ayre, planter, of the parish of Clarendon. Thomas Iredill swore as a witness in Jamaica in September 1755.

The Honorable Thomas Iredell of the parish of Clarendon in the island of Jamaica. Esquire.

All my real estate liable to the payment of just debts in case my personal estate shall be insufficient for that purpose.

To my nephew Rev. Arthur Iredell now or late residing in Guildford, Surrey, Great Britain, second surviving son of my late brother Francis Iredell, his heirs, executors and administrators for ever all my plantation in Clarendon called Pinders Valley with all the works and buildings, negro and other slaves thereon; and all the pasture or parcel of penn land in Clarendon called Pindars Lodge about 12 miles distant from the said plantation; and about a mean distance between [?] and Old Harbour Bay and consisting of about 800 acres of land with the messuages, buildings and negroes thereon.

All my other real and personal estate and effects whatsoever and wherever also to Rev. Arthur Iredell.

My worthy friend Hon. James Wildman of Jamaica Esquire and Arthur Iredell to be executors.
