London West India merchant, identified in the will of Isaac Higgin proved in 1832 as an employee in Higgin Whiteley, and later a partner with John Higgin, the son of Isaac Higgin. John Mackarness died at Elstree House Bath in 1870 leaving £2000. His son, John Fielder Mackarness, the bishop of Oxford, has an entry in the ODNB.
