Biography

Son of John Campbell (formerly Coates), merchant of Clathick, Perthshire, and Agnes nee Colquhoun. Assumed the additional surname Colquhoun in 1804. Admitted as an advocate in 1779. Married Mary Ann, daughter of Rev. William Erskine, in 1796. Lord Advocate in 1807. MP for Elgin 1807-1810 and Dunbartonshire 1810-1820. Sheriff of Perth 1793-1807, rector of Glasgow University 1807-1809. Died at the house of his son-in-law, Walter Long, at Hartham, Wiltshire, 1820. Buried in New Kilpatrick, Glasgow.

Trustee of General Sir Thomas Stirling (owner of Ardoch in St Ann, Jamaica), in 1808.
