1737 - 1779
Given as 'William Salmond of Seaforth Antigua' by Oliver, son of Capt. James Salmond, whose estates are given elsewhere by Sothebys as Sage Hill and Salmonds; this second source says that William Salmond sold the two estates he inherited from his father on reaching his majority, but subsequently inherited an estate from his cousin Francis Hanson (who died in 1747). His son James Hanson Salmond became Military Secretary in the HEIC.
A pair of portraits of William Salmond and his second wife Jane Hasell by George Romney was sold by Sothebys in 2006.
Descendants of William Salmond include his great great grandsons Sir John Maitland Salmond (1881-1968) and Sir (William) Geoffrey Hanson Salmond (1878-1933), both senior air force officers with entries in the ODNB.
Under an indenture of 20/06/1774, William Salmond late of Antigua but now of Carlisle Cumberland committed to buy an unnamed estate in Antigua with 62 enslaved people belonging to Nesbitt Darby for £7000, subject to an annuity of £500 p.a. to Darby and his wife Elizabeth.
