Biography

Of Dean Street Soho when he made his will in 1772. Son of William Hall of Jamaica and his wife Mary. Born in 1725. His father had died by 1758 and his mother had remarried, to a Mr Barclay. Owned Worcester, Williamsfield, Tryall and Irwin sugar estates in St James, Jamaica. Other land mentioned in his will probably included Hallhead and Johnshall.

Thomas Hall was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 5705 acres of land in St James.

Wyllis and Hall were listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owners of 1300 acres of land in St Thomas-in-the-East; this may refer to Margaret or Benjamin Wyllis, Cossely, John, Lewis, Mark, Thomas or William Hall (all q.v.).

Thomas Hall of Britain, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1773. Slave-ownership at probate: 752 of whom 416 were listed as male and 336 as female. 240 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £58,613.13 Jamaican currency of which £50,653.50 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £3,904.51 currency debts and £0 currency plate.

The will of Thomas Hall of St John Esquire was proved in Jamaica, 11/08/1773 and the will of Thomas Hall of London Esquire 11/09/1773.

Thomas Hall of Dean Street, Soho, Middlesex.

Worcester sugar estate in St James, Jamaica, lately in copartnership with John Rusea, to my second son William Hall and his heirs. In default to my third son Thomas Hall and his heirs, in default to my eldest son Hugh Kirkpatrick Hall and his heirs.

Six parcels of land adjoining and to the southward of Worcester, patented by Francis Moore, George Somerville, John Key, John Gandy, Daniel Thornton and William Hall, totaling 1600 acres: 1000 acres thereof to my son William Hall and his heirs. In default to Thomas and his heirs and in default to Hugh Kirkpatrick.

Williamsfield sugar estate in St James lately in copartnership with William Baker to my son Thomas Hall and his heirs. In default to William and his heirs and in default to Hugh Kirkpatrick and his heirs.

The remainder of the above mentioned 1600 acres, namely 600 acres, to Thomas Hall and his heirs. In default to William Hall and his heirs, in default to Hugh Kirkpatrick and his heirs.

Should Thomas die before age 21 years, then his estates shall be charged with £3,000 sterling, of which £1,000 I give to my daughter Mary Lawrence, £1,000 to my daughter Sarah Hall and the remaining £1,000 to my daughter Dehany Hall.

My two remaining estates Tryall and Irwin in St James and also my pen adjoining Irwin estate, all my property at Montego Bay to the use of Philip Dehany of Farleigh in Hampshire and James Kerr of Hanover in Jamaica upon trust for 99 years for the purposes thereinafter mentioned. To the use of my eldest son Hugh Kirkpatrick Hall for his natural life. After his decease to his eldest son and his heirs male, in default to his second son and his heirs male etc; in default to my second son William Hall and his heirs male; in default to Thomas Hall and his heirs male.

Tryall and Irwin to be charged with an annuity of £500 in trust for my daughters or younger children, to be invested in securities, to pay the following legacies: £7,000 each to Sarah Hall and Dehany Hall; £2,000 in trust for Mary Lawrence, the interest to be paid to her and the capital to be divided amongst her children upon her death. When these legacies have been satisfied, the annuity is to cease.

£2,000 to my son William Hall.

All rest and residue to my son Hugh Kirkpatrick Hall.

Philip Dehany, James Kerr, Hugh Kirkpatrick Hall and William Hall and my son-in-law Richard James Lawrence to be executors and guardians of my younger children.
