George Cavell Webbe

1799 - 1871

Claimant or beneficiary

Biography

Natural son of George Webbe of Mylor (q.v.), under whose will he was tenant-for-life of George Webbe of Mylor's unnamed estates on Nevis. From the evidence of other claimants whose claims were consistent with the will of George Webbe of Mylor, it appears that these were Bachelors Hall and Stoney Hill. Served as President of Nevis 1860-1864.

Son of George Webbe and Frances Cavell, baptised 13/10/1799 in Budock, Cornwall. George Cavell Webbe, second son of George, of Budock, Cornwall. Matriculated Christ Church, Oxford, 12/04/1820, aged 20. In Upper School Fifth Form, at Eton in 1817. Married Sarah Hanley 22/01/1834. Died 1871.

He appears in the slave registers as George Webbe or George Webbe junior and is very likely the George Webbe awarded slave compensation for Nevis claim no. 79 and Nevis claim no. 296.

The dates listed below have different categories as denoted by the letters in the brackets following each date. Here is a key to explain those letter codes:

  • SD - Association Start Date
  • SY - Association Start Year
  • EA - Earliest Known Association
  • ED - Association End Date
  • EY - Association End Year
  • LA - Latest Known Association
1825 [EA] - 1834 [LA] → Tenant-for-life

Inferred to be the same man as the George Webbe shown as owner in the Slave Registers and as tenant-for-life in the compensation records.

1828 [EA] - 1834 [LA] → Tenant-for-life

The George Webbe shown for 1828-1834 probably refers to George Cavell Webbe, George Webbe of Mylor's natural son: under the latter's will proved in 1827, he left a life-interest in his unnamed estates on Nevis to George Cavell Webbe.
