Planter and slave-owner in St Mary, Jamaica. Died intestate in 1820 or 1821. The enslaved people on his Paisley estate in St Mary were inherited in trust by his five natural children. At least two of these children were born of Margaret McLeod, a 'free brown' who was registered as legal owner of Paisley in 1832.
Alexander Smellie and Janet Smellie, children of colour were baptised in St Mary, Jamaica, 19/06/1815. Sarah isabela Smellie aged 3 years and William Robert Smellie born 04/04/1821, children of Mary McLeod 'fr[ee] bro[wn]' and Robert Smellie, were baptised in Kingston, Jamaica, 26/09/1821. No baptism has been found for their sibling Elizabeth Smellie.
