John Wade

Biography

Owner of Essex plantation in St Mary, Jamaica, from at least 1817 to 1834. Resident in Jamaica during this time. Attorney for other estates in St Mary and St George from at least 1817 to 1826. He died between making his claim for the enslaved people on the Essex estate in 1834 or 1835 and the awarding of the compensation in 1836.

  1. William (born 1819), Eleanor (born (1820) and George (born 1821), "mustees", reputed children of John Wade Esquire, were baptised in St Mary 20/03/1821.

  2. Possibly also the father of: John Wade, "quadroon", age 11 years, baptised in St Mary, 17/08/1817; Henry John Wade, son of Susan Hamilton, "free", baptised in St Mary, 22/03/1835.

  3. William Charles, son of John and Rebecca Mary Wade, born 17/06/1806 and baptised 10/08/1806 in St Catherine. This may be the same John Wade. No marriage has been found for John and Rebecca Mary.

  4. A John Wade is one of three witnesses to the will of Richard Drake, planter (brother of Samuel Drake) whose will was signed in Jamaica 01/02/1805 (proved in London in 1815). The other witnesses were John Shawe and Thomas Holmes.
