William Charles

Biography

Possibly of Liverpool; see claim notes for St Mary claim no. 103 (Upton).

Tentatively identified as William Charles, son of Thomas Charles and his wife Melmoth nee Hall, baptised 19/09/1762 in Ormskirk. His brothers Thomas (1764) and John (1767) were baptised in Jamaica. Thomas Charles was a coppersmith of Kingston who died at Martha Brae, Falmouth, Jamaica, in September 1798. Melmoth Hall died in 1817 in Ormskirk; in her will she bequeathed her properties in Harbour Street and Water Lane, Kingston, to her son William Charles, who had lately occupied some of the buildings. Melmoth Hall was baptised 03/10/1738 in St Oswald's, Chester, daughter of Joseph Hall, a merchant, and Sophia Melmoth, daughter of William Melmoth the elder. The will mentions her sister Constantia Hall, her nephew William Dennis Hall of Kingston (q.v.) and her niece Anne Steers.
