George Hall

Biography

The 10th and youngest son of William Hall of Tully, Co. Donegal, Ireland. (Year of birth estimated.) Established mercantile business in Barbados before 1805.

1810: married Lucretia Ostrehan, only daughter of Joseph Ostrehan ( -7 August 1809) and his wife, Elvira ( -12 Jan. 1848). No children by the marriage.

Owned Locust Hall plantation and 'appears to have had extensive mercantile interest in Barbados, Demerara and elsewhere'. In Barbados, a merchant in Bridgetown.

Buried in St George's church, Barbados. On the north wall of the church, the memorial tablet to Hall (which shows his death on 12/09/1810 aged 34) was sculpted by the celebrated artist, Richard Westmacott. Dated 1813.

Will dated 23 July 1810; proved 21 September 1810.
Referred to his Marriage settlement, 23 February 1810: parties to the settlement: Lucretia, and her mother Elvira Ostrehan; Trustees: Samuel Perry and George Gibbs the Younger. To Lucretia: annuity if she survived him and legacy of £2,000 sterling ('and desired the marriage settlement trustees to secure the sum of £10,000 mentioned in the settlement for the purpose of raising the said annuity against his plantation Locust Hall').

Under the will, left to his brother David his share of 'his faithful servant, Samuel Thornhill': Samuel to be manumitted and given £10 currency per annum for his life.
Various sums to his nephews and nieces and godchildren; the residue of the estate to his brother David. Executors: David Hall, Thomas Law, merchant of Barbados, Thomas Hollingsworth, planter of Barbados, and Richard Wace, merchant, of Castle Street, Falcon Square, London.
