Richard Roper was an Ensign in the Kingston Foot Militia before 1796. In 1798, Roper was appointed 1st Lieutenant in 3rd Company (Jews) in Kingston Foot Militia, and in 1807 he was appointed Captain in the St-Thomas-in-the-Vale Regiment.
In 1809 the Recess estate in St Thomas-in-the-Vale was recorded as being registered to Richard Roper, but by 1815 it was registered to to Nicholas Gyles.
In 1813, ‘Richard Roper, of the parish of St Thomas in the Vale, planter’ was called to be a juror for the 1814 February Grand Court, Jamaica.
In 1818, three parcels of land belonging to Richard Roper in St Ann’s were offered for sale by Roper's attorneys, Theophilus Stains and Wm Jayne.
