Benjamin Cowell

???? - 1783

Biography

London surgeon and husband of Mrs Ann Cowell (nee Arcedeckne) (q.v.).

  1. Will of Benjamin Cowell of Coleshill Hertfordshire proved 26/04/1783. In the will he left his estate at Coleshill to his wife Ann for life and then to his son Andrew. The will makes no mention of the Swamps estate in Jamaica [for which Benjamin Cowell was shown as the owner 1769-1782, after which it was shown for Mrs Ann Cowell 1783-1790] but does say he was entitled to 'several negros and other slaves, men women and children' in Jamaica, which he placed in trust for his wife Ann for life and then to his son Andrew.

  2. Andrew Cowell (1762-1821) became a general in the British Army. His son Sir John Cowell Stepney-Cowell (a beneficiary under the will of his grandmother Ann Cowell q.v.) was responsible for much of the early development of Llanelli as an industrial centre. One of the streets developed on the Stepney estate in Llanelli was named after the Arcedeckne's East Anglian estate Glevering Hall.
