Claimant or beneficiary

Biography

MP for Leicester 1784-1790 and beneficiary under the will of John Purcell (q.v.). According to Lewis Namier, Macnamara had expectations of money from the West Indies as early as 1779. The compensation for the Norton Valley estate was paid into the Chancery suit of Purcell v Macnamara, after Macnamara's death.

  1. Will of John MacNamara of Llangoed Castle, Breconshire proved 31/07/1818. His will referred to amounts owed to him by Robert Lang & Co., and to his property in Tortola (the value of which he said he could not ascertain), as well as in Wales and in London. He left the property in trust (his trustees were his wife and his son Arthur Macnamara), but had made a family settlement in 1809 which he ratified under which he settled £10,000 on his second son John.
