Biography

Slave-owner in Trelawney, Jamaica. Probably died at some point between 1832 and 1834. Hillier & Co., 6 Raymond Buildings, Grays Inn, wrote to the Slave Compensation Commissioners in 1835 stating: 'a poor person named Ann Grant formerly named Ann Giddings who is entitled to a legacy under the will of her brother Anthony Giddings payable out of the Wiltshire estate at Trelawney, Jamaica, the subject of George Marret's claim no. 21, and her Mother and sister, both named Susannah Giddings, and her brother Moses Giddings (who are all poor people in this country and entitled to legacies under the same will) are apprehensive they may not get paid if the Executor is allowed to receive upon his claim...these poor persons have been ignorant what course to puruse and have carried in no counterclaim'.

Roger (1785), Mary (1788), Ann (1790) and Susannah (1793), all children of Alexander Giddings and his wife Susannah, were baptised in Urchfont, Wiltshire. Ann Giddings married Hannabal Grant in Rowde, Wiltshire, in 1809. Anthony Giddings has not been traced but it seems likely that this is the same family.

Hannibal and Ann Grant had at least six children: Roger Grant (baptised in Rowde in 1809, one month after their marriage); Susannah (baptised in Rowde in 1811); Edward (Rowde 1814) and Marian (Rowde 1818); Roger (1826 in St Mary's Lambeth, abode Sa? Place, father's occupation labourer); Henry Roger (1827 St Mary's Lambeth, abode Vauxhall Walk, father's occupation labourer). Henry Roger Grant died in March 1828. Hannibal appears in the 1841 census age 58 with Mary age 55 and Roger age 27 in Carlisle Street, Lambeth. He is in the 1851 census, widowed, age 71, in the Lambeth workhouse.
