Slave-owner on Barbados, an absentee in Britain at least later in his life, and brother-in-law of Rowland Blackman (q.v.).
Will of George Hannay [formerly of the island of Barbados in America but now] of Stanlake in Berkshire [made in 1767] proved 07/12/1776. Under the will he left his wife Anna Maria: an annuity of £500 p.a. and three amounts of £1500, £1300 and £2450, the first two in Bank stock and Bank annuities; debts owed to him of £4000 by John Lyte [?] of Barbados and £1600 by Conrad Adams of Barbados; and his house in Conduit Street, she paying the reserved Annual Rent thereof. He left his sister-in-law Frances Blackman spinster an annuity of £150 p.a. and other annuities to family members of £20 p.a. and £30 p.a. He left his niece Anna Maria Blackman £1000 in Bank Stock and £4000 in Bank annuities. He had a balance due from his nephew John Lucie Blackman and his partner William Shaw of London, and provided that £500 be left with them interest-free for four years. His residuary heir was his brother-in-law Rowland Blackman.
George Hannay was buried at St Katherine Coleman, City of London. 26/10/1776, having been brought from St George Hanover Square and dying of ‘a decline’ in his seventy-fourth year. He was buried in the middle aisle of St Katherine Coleman Church under the clerk’s desk.
