James Campbell the elder

Biography

Owner of Duan Vale and Gibraltar estate, and presumably father of James Campbell the younger who was the attorney for the Gibraltar estate in 1801. Although the family ties have not been unpicked this appears to be the same man as the James Campbell a minor registered as the owner of Gibraltar and of Duan Vale c. 1765-1773, and also the brother of John Campbell of Spotfield and Gibraltar (q.v.) and of Margaret Campbell. If the identification is correct, this man died c. 1831.

  1. James Campbell of Dowan Vale, Jamaica was admitted as burgess of Banff in 1783.

The dates listed below have different categories as denoted by the letters in the brackets following each date. Here is a key to explain those letter codes:

  • SD - Association Start Date
  • SY - Association Start Year
  • EA - Earliest Known Association
  • ED - Association End Date
  • EY - Association End Year
  • LA - Latest Known Association
1766 [EA] - 1795 [LA] → Joint owner

The Accounts Produce are not entirely clear but the estate appears to have been held by James Campbell [the eldest] who died in 1766; and then by his son James Campbell [the elder], shown as a minor 1765-1773. The James Campbell who was shown as deceased in 1786 was probably the James Campbell [the eldest] who d. 1766.
