Thomas Dimes

1. Thomas Dimes was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 11 acres of land in St Andrew and 800 acres of land in St Thomas-in-the-East, total 811 acres.

2. Filed accounts for Oxford estate in St Mary, Jamaica, in 1755, and was trustee of a second estate in Clarendon, where the Accounts Produce suggest he might have died in the 1750s.

3. Thomas Dimes of Kingston, Jamaica, either this man or presumably his son, was one of the Governors and Guardians of the Foundling Hospital in Lambs Conduit Fields, in 1783.

4. Neither of the two known baptisms in Britain (1710 with parents Thomas Dimes and Anne; 1726 with father William Dimes, both baptisms in St Mary, Guildford, Surrey) are this man as the first died in 1739 and the second was buried in Guildford in 1754. Instead he may be Thomas Dymes born 02/01/1722 at Charleston, South Carolina one of several sons of Thomas Dymes, brewer and slave-owner, who in 1725 signed a letter from St Andrew's church, South Carolina to the Bishop of London. The father died in 1730 having made his will 17/12/1729 dividing his estate among his children. On 19/01/1681 a Thomas Dymes son of Robert was baptised at St. Simon and St Jude, Norwich, Norfolk.
