Former merchant of Glasgow, but dying in Jamaica; mortgagee-In-possession of the Manningsfield estate in Vere Jamaica at least 1785-1789. Partner in Anderson, Coats and Whytlaw of Glasgow and of Thomson & Whytlaw in Jamaica.
Thomas Whytlaw contributed £4 15s to the University of Pennsylvania following Dr John Morgan's fundraising tour of the West Indies in 1772-1773.
