Edward Francis Coke the elder

Jamaican slave-owner, previous owner of Paynestown in St Elizabeth, dead by 1795.

1. Edward Francis, born 26/02/1767 and baptised 07/07/1767 in St Elizabeth, Jamaica, son of Francis Coke (otherwise Cooke) and his wife Mary (nee Chambers, then Armstrong). His father was Custos and Chief Judge of Common Pleas, St.Elizabeth, 1779-82, Major-General of Militia, 1779, and Member of the Island’s Council, 1779-82; the marriage with Mrs Armstrong [19/07/1764] may have been his third. He married Margaret Smith, spinster, in St Elizabeth, 07/10/1784. Two children: Mary (born 19/12/1787, baptised 05/05/1791) and Edward Francis (q.v., born posthumously, 10/01/1795 and baptised 15/09/1796.
