Edward Woodhouse

???? - 1846

Biography

Edward Woodhouse was shown as the owner of St Faiths in St John Jamaica in 1798. The estate then passes into receivership and out of sight, but in his will made in 1827 Edward Woodhouse of Leominster Herefordshire referred to a coffee estate he owned in Jamaica. Edward Woodhouse was the brother of Joseph Woodhouse (q.v.) the previous owner of St Faith's.

  1. The will of Edward Woodhouse gentleman of Leominster Herefordshire [made in 1827] was proved 20/08/1846. Under the will he left his unnamed coffee estate in Jamaica to his three sons James Thomas, Francis and Thomas John Woodhouse, 'with the negroes, stock and appurtenances thereunto belonging' in trust for them to sell for the benefit of all his children. In a codicil he recorded in vivo gifts to his son Rev. George Woodhouse and revoked a legacy of £1000 to his daughter Margaret on the basis that the had settled £1000 on her in anticipation of her marriage. He made no mention in the codicil of Jamaica property, but he must have sold it.

  2. Edward Woodhouse was an ironmonger. His father, Edward Woodhouse senior had been a hop merchant. The man who traded with Jamaica in 1769 must have been the older man.
