Daniel MacQueen

???? - 8th Jul 1758

Biography

Father of John MacQueen otherwise McQueen, and grand-father of John MacQueen, to whom he entailed the Potosi estate in St Thomas-in-the-East Jamaica. A slightly ambiguous entry in Caribbeana III shows him as dying in Jamaica in 1758.

Two memorial inscriptions in Kingston Cathedral:

DANIEL MACKQUEEN, OF KINGSTON PARISH, ESQRE. OB. 8 JULY 1758, AET MARY HIS YOUNGEST DAUR., BY JANE HANBURY MACKQUEEN, HIS 2d WIFE, OB. 27 JUNE 1760, AET. 2 YRS. 10 MTHS. ALSO JAS. MACKQUEEN, MERCHT. OB. 19 FEB 1765, AET. 49.

MARGARET, WIFE OF DANIEL MCQUEEN OF KINGSTON, MERCHT., OB. DEC. 1 1757 AET 29, ALSO THE BODY OF HER SISTER, THE WIFE OF GEORGE RICHARDS EQR. MERCHT. OB: 1 JULY, 1755, AET. 30. LIKEWISE THE BODY OF THEIR SISTER ANN, WIFE OF JOHN MINOT, OB. 17 JANY. 1758 AET. 30, ALSO MARY M .......... 10 SEP. 1764.

Daniel Macqueen of Kingston Esquire married Jane Hanbury Taylor of St Catherine, spinster, in Kingston 21/11/1754. No earlier marriage for him to Margaret has been found, but her death after his marriage to Jane Hanbury Taylor suggests there were two Daniel Macqueens marrying in Kingston around this time.

Presumed to be the Daniel McQueen who owned 800 acres of land in St Andrew in 1753.

Daniel McQueen was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 250 acres of land in St Catherine and 575 acres of land in St Andrew, total 825 acres. McFarlane and McQueen were listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owners of 224 acres of land in St Andrew.

Daniel Mcqueen of Kingston, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1760. Slave-ownership at probate: 134 of whom 80 were listed as male and 54 as female. 0 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £22740.19 Jamaican currency of which £7280 currency was the value of enslaved people.
