Biography

  1. Resident slave-owner in Jamaica, Member of Assembly for Portland 1768, died 1776.

  2. Nathaniel Grant was named as an executor (in Jamaica) of the will of Alexander Forbes, gentleman, of Kingston (written in 1769 and proved in 1771), with the caveat that Grant may still owe money to Forbes' estate and is expected to still settle the debt: "And I do nominate, constitute and appoint my good friends William Forbes and Nathaniel Grant, both of the Parish of Kingston in the said Island, esquires, and my partner John Gillespie of the same place, gentleman, executors in this island of this my last will and testament. But it is my express meaning and intention that my nominating and appointing the said gentlemen as my executors or legatees shall not be construed as a discharge to them, or either of them, that may be indebted to me or to my estate at my decease in any sum or sums of money whatever; but that they fairly settle their accounts with my estate, one with the other, and in particular that my partner Mr. Gillespie do settle and adjust as well his private account as the co-partnership account with the said William Forbes and Nathaniel Grant. And I give and bequeath to my said executors ten guineas each for mourning."

  3. Nathaniel Grant contributed £28 to the University of Pennsylvania following Dr John Morgan's fundraising tour of the West Indies in 1772-1773.

  4. Nathaniel Grant of Kingston, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1777. Slave-ownership at probate: 285 of whom 150 were listed as male and 135 as female. 0 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £28794.95 Jamaican currency of which £19126.25 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £5231.38 currency debts and £298.75 currency plate.
