Slave-owner and reportedly merchant of Jamaica, dying 1750. His son, also Hugh, matriculated Glasgow 1757.
Hugh White, deceased was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 900 acres of land in St James and 1565 acres of land in Hanover, total 2465 acres.
Hugh White of Westmoreland, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1752. Slave-ownership at probate: 250 of whom 128 were listed as male and 122 as female. 0 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £36844.78 Jamaican currency of which £12698.8 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £234.1 currency cash, £13189.45 currency debts and £167.5 currency plate.
