James Montgomerie

Biography

Slave-owner on Dominica. Soldier and colonial governor, and MP for Ayrshire 1818-1829 ('He presented a petition from the planters of Dominica, where he had been governor, against equalizing the East and West Indian sugar duties, 19 Mar. 1823...He voted against the motion to condemn the Jamaican slave trials, 2 Mar. 1826.'). James Montgomerie was shown as the co-owner of the Union estate with James Laing (q.v.). His will, proved 28/04/1829, is brief and left everything to his widow.
