Mauritius merchant, bankrupt in 1832 but re-inventing himself as the Secretary of the Great Western Railway from 1833-1863. The decision to hire him was 'perhaps the most important of all in the history of the Great Western Railway...[he] proved more influential than any other in making the Great Western Railway a success.'
