Biography

  1. Colin Campbell died in 1752 and his eldest son John turned 21 years of age in January 1756.

  2. Collin Campbell, deceased was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 3513 acres of land in Hanover, 60 acres in Westmoreland and 7720 acres in St Elizabeth, total 11293 acres.

  3. Will of Colin Campbell [heretofore of Jamaica but now residing in the parish] of St George Hanover Square [made in 1748] proved 16/04/1752. He increased the annuity of his wife under their marriage settlement from £500 currency to £500 sterling, and left her an additional £500 p.a. on the death of his mother Mrs Elizabeth Campbell, together - should she choose to live in Jamaica - with the right to live in any of his houses there and with six 'negroes' of her choice 'except Drivers, tradesmen and Boylers.' He left his moiety of Orange Bay and his moiety of Fish River both in Hanover to his son Colin Campbell, in both cases with his share of the enslaved people upon them, together with two runs of land of 300 acres and 700 acres contiguous to these estates. All the rest of his estates, he said, would pass to his oldest son John Campbell, with remainder to his son Colin and then to his daughters Elizabeth and Margaret Jane, providing that the husbands of the latter agreed to take the name Campbell. If they did not, then the daughters' inheritance would be confined to the £4000 each which he left them under his will.

  4. Colin Campbell of St Elizabeth, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1752. Slave-ownership at probate: 273 of whom 151 were listed as male and 122 as female. 57 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £31018.99 Jamaican currency of which £12448 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £26 currency cash, £5267.04 currency debts and £82 currency plate.
