Biography

Apparently resident slave-owner, owner of Spring Garden in St George. Dead by 1768.

John Spencer was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 318 acres of land in St Catherine, 604 acres in St Andrew and 8 acres in Vere, total 930 acres. Another John Spencer was listed as the owner of 385 acres of land in St Catherine, 520 acres in St John and 227 acres in St Thomas-in-the-Vale, total 1132 acres. John Spencer and William Gee were listed as the owners of 1020 acres of land in St George.

John Spencer of St George, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1769. Slave-ownership at probate: 376 of whom 245 were listed as male and 131 as female. 41 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £45211.98 Jamaican currency of which £20382 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £31.56 currency cash, £18330.02 currency debts and £100 currency plate.
