1744 - 17th Sep 1811
Slave-owner in Jamaica, shown as 'of Great Britain' in 1807. Not definitively further traced to date, but probably William Phillips III of Somerville or Summerville Dumfries, who reportedly died c. 1811.
In 1811, the following notice appeared in the Royal Gazette of Jamaica: “DIED - At his pen, in [Clarendon] parish, on the 17th inst. William Phillips, Esq, aged 67 years, a very old and respectable inhabitant of this island. For the last ten years he had resided near Dumfries, in Scotland, and had only returned to this island about four months ago, for the purpose of visiting his properties.”
