Born 27/01/1807 and baptised 14/10/1807 in Kingston, Jamaica, a "free mulatto child". No parents' names given in the baptism record but he is named in the will of his grandfather Richard Wells as one of three children of Mary Wells, herself the reputed daughter of Richard Wells. Mary and her children were the main beneficiaries of Richard's will.

Enslaved boy on Unity Valley Pen, Jamaica. Manumitted in 1795 by David Barclay and removed to Philadelphia, with 29 other freed persons from the estate, where he was placed under the care of Society for Improving the Condition of Free Blacks.
