Biography

  1. Thomas Cockburn was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 500 acres of land in St Andrew.

  2. Thomas Cockburn of St Andrew, doctor. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1769. Slave-ownership at probate: 6 of whom 3 were listed as male and 3 as female. 0 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £10795.27 Jamaican currency of which £210 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £10103.78 currency debts and £110.38 currency plate.

  3. A Thomas Cockburn "of Jamaica" graduated MD at Glasgow University in 1747.

There are four entries in the Accounts Produce for "estate of Dr Thomas Cockburn": 1752, hire of enslaved people, land sales, yard and house rental, "Account of the rents, profits and produce of the estate of Dr. Thomas Cockburn come into hands of Thomas Hibbert and Nathan Sprigg attorneys to said Cockburn. Account filed by the said Nathan Sprigg"; 1752, estate of Dr Thomas Cockburn & Richard Moore, Kingston, hire of enslaved people and house rental, "Estate of Dr. Thomas Cockburn and Richard Moore a minor. Account of the estate come to the hands of Thomas Hibbert and Nathan Sprigg attorneys to the said Cockburn and to James Woodcock surviving trustee to said Moore a minor. Account filed by Nathan Sprigg attorney to Dr. Thomas Cockburn and to James Woodcock surviving trustee to Richard Moore a minor."; 1754, Kingston, house rental and hire of enslaved people, "Estate of Dr. Thomas Cockburne come to the hands of Thomas Hibbert and Nathan Sprigg attorneys to the said Cockburne. Account filed by the said Nathan Sprigg."; 1764, house rent and "negro hire", "Accounts filed for 1761-1762. Belonging to the estate of Dr. Thomas Cockburn now in the hands of Thomas Hibbert Esq. as attorney."

The variation in dates suggests perhaps two different Dr Thomas Cockburns.
