Biography

Resident slave-owner in Jamaica, with family in Cornwall England.

  1. Will of Thomas Peters of St Catherine Jamaica proved 20/08/1768. He left £100 each to his brother or brothers in England, and left named enslaved people (Peachey and her son March; and Jenny sister of Toby; Sophy and her increase) to friends in Jamaica. He freed Anne or Anna Jublee [?] daughter of Peachey with the proviso that it be lawful for his executors to retain her in seven years' apprenticeship. He left Toby £5 p.a. so long as he continued to care for Peters' pen 'late Bretts and Goat Island'. He instructed his other property be sold for the benefit of his nephews in England, Joseph and Jonathan Peters.

  2. His nephews and heirs were Joseph Peters Bachelor of Physick of Truro Cornwall whose will was proved 21/10/1773 and Rev. Jonathan Peters clerk of St Clement Cornwall whose will was proved 07/05/1789. In the will of the former Joseph Peters recapitulated that he and his brother were residuary legatees of their uncle Thomas Peters and said that the greatest part of such real and personal estate remains undiminished in the hands possession or power of Henry Rennalls of Jamaica. He left 3/20th of his moiety of Thomas Peters's residuary estate to his wife; 6/20ths to his brother John; 3/20ths to his sister Buckingham; and 1/20th to his sister Mary Peters [the remainder implicitly formed part of his own residuary estate which he left to his brother Jonathan, after legacies including £1000 to his niece, Jonathan's daughter]. Jonathan Peters' own will is silent on the Jamaica property.
