Biography

Slave-owner in Jamaica, apparently resident, dying c. 1761. John Garrioch was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 415 acres of land in St Thomas-in-the-East. His Leith Hall estate appears to have been in trusteeship for his creditors between 1752 and at least 1754.

  1. John Garrioch of St Thomas-in-the-East, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1761. Slave-ownership at probate: 126 of whom 65 were listed as male and 61 as female. 29 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £9319.04 Jamaican currency of which £5640 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £1334.5 currency debts and £572.88 currency plate.
