Biography

Son-in-law of John Gregory and father of Mary Morant nee Goddard, whose father James Goddard is known to have predeceased John Gregory, dying c. 1746.

  1. Administration of the will of James Goddard Doctor of Physick [late of Jamaica but now] of the City of London [made in 1746] granted 01/12/1749. In the will he left his unnamed estate in St Thomas-in-the-Vale to be sold for the benefit of his two daughters Jane Elizabeth Goddard and Mary Whitehorse Goddard.

  2. The James Goddard who was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 1528 acres of land in St Ann, 1328 acres in St James and 300 acres in St John, total 3156 acres appears to have been the James Goddard [late of St Ann Jamaica but now] of Sible Hedingham Essex whose will was proved 15/03/1741 [1742 NS] and who left his estate in Jamaica to his son James Goddard subject to payments of £80 p.a. to each of his [the younger James Goddard's] brothers William and Whitehorne Goddard and sister Eleanor until 21, and then £1000 each.

  3. James Goddard of St Catherine, doctor. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1750. Slave-ownership at probate: 206 of whom 106 were listed as male and 100 as female. 37 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £6089 Jamaican currency of which £4829 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £155 currency debts and £91 currency plate.
