Biography

From a Jamaican slave-owning family. She was an annuitant (of £400 p.a.) under the will of her brother Zachary Bayly (q.v.).

Will of Mary Bayly of Layton House, Westbury, Wiltshire, spinster, made and published 03/03/1777.

To my brother-in-law John Barton of Corsley, Wiltshire, gentleman, and my nephew John Edwards of London, gentleman, £1000 sterling to put the same out at interest and pay the interest to my sister Jane now wife of John Watts of Trowbridge, Wiltshire, for life, for her own sole and separate use. Thereafter the captial sum to her children in the manner she directs in her will.

To John Barton and John Edwards, £400 in trust to pay the interest to my niece Elizabeth now wife of Daniel Clutterbuck of Bradford, Wiltshire, gentleman, for her own sole and separate use. Thereafter to her children in the manner she directs in her will. The same sum and conditions in trust with the interest to my niece Mary Edwards, daughter of my sister Elizabeth Edwards of Layton House, widow. The same sum and conditions in trust with the interest to my niece Fanny Singer for her own sole and separate use. The same to my sister Ann Barton, wife of John Barton, thereafter in trust to my niece Elizabeth Barton. £800 in trust under the same conditions with the interest to my sister Jane Watts; thereafter to my two nieces Mary Bayly Watts and Elizabeth Arthur Watts at age 21.

To my sister Mrs Susannah Singer, widow, £20.

To John Barton and John Watts, £20 each.

I beg my beloved nephew Bryan Edwards Esq to accept a mourning ring as a token of my particular regard for him. To his brother Mr Zachary Edwards, £50.

To my sister Elizabeth Edwards, my best suit of flowered muslin linen and the diamond ring that was my late mother's. [several smaller bequests of goods to family.] My coach and pair of horses in trust for my sisters Elizabeth Edwards and Jane Watts.

£100 in trust to John Barton and John Edwards, the interest to the minister or teacher of the Dissenting Protestant Congratation of the Old meeting House in Westbury. [Several smaller gifts to friends.]

All rest and residue to Elizabeth Edwards and my nephew John Edwards.

Elizabeth Edwards, John Barton and John Edwards to be executors.
